Common questions

My confirmation code hasn't arrived
Check your spam or junk folder. On the "Check your email" screen, tap "Resend email" for a new code. The email also has a link you can tap on your phone instead.
I forgot my password
On the sign-in screen, tap "Forgot your password?". We'll email you a code (and a link) to choose a new password.
Why can't I save an observation?
Kaitiaki NZ records observations in New Zealand, so the pin needs to be in New Zealand. Tap "Adjust on map" to move it. The date can't be in the future.
Who can see where I saw something?
Only you can see the exact spot. Others see an approximate area (about 1 km) by default, and you can choose Exact or Private for each observation. Threatened species are always shown only as a general area (about 10 km).
What if I don't know what I saw?
Choose "I'm not sure what it is", pick the kind of organism and describe it. Other members can suggest an ID, and you choose whether to use it.
How do I report a wrong or inappropriate observation?
Open it and tap "Report this observation". If several people report the same record, it's hidden until it has been checked.
How do I block someone?
Tap "Block" on their profile or one of their observations. You won't see their observations or ID suggestions, and they can't suggest IDs for yours. They aren't told. Unblock them any time in Settings > Blocked people.
What is Kaitiaki Plus?
Extra features: your life list, a yearly summary, offline recording, data export and accent colours. It's free during early access, with no payment details needed.
How do I delete my account?
In the app, go to Settings > Password & account > Delete my account. Your profile, observations, photos and other data are permanently removed. More about deleting your account.
Does a pest report alert DOC or my council?
No. Pest reports are shared with the Kaitiaki NZ community only. If you think you've found a new or unusual pest or disease, call the Biosecurity New Zealand hotline on 0800 80 99 66.
